How Much Will This Cost, and Is It Covered by Insurance?

 Cost is one of the most common questions patients have when seeking footcare. It’s completely understandable — you want to know what to expect before booking an appointment. At Whitby Family Footcare Clinic, fees are always transparent, and treatment plans are designed to be both effective and cost‑conscious. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how much of their care is covered under their extended health benefits.

What You Can Expect to Pay for Footcare

The cost of your visit depends on the type of appointment and the care you need. Fees reflect the time spent, the complexity of the issue, and the regulated clinical standards required for safe, effective treatment. Common appointment types include:

  • Initial assessments — a full examination of your foot concern, including history, hands‑on evaluation, and a treatment plan.
  • Follow‑up visits — ongoing care for skin, nail, biomechanical, or pain‑related issues.
  • Orthotic assessments — biomechanical evaluation, gait analysis, and prescription of custom orthotics when needed.
  • Skin and nail procedures — treatment for ingrown toenails, corns, calluses, cracked heels, or fungal nails.

You’ll always know the fee before treatment begins, and there are no surprise charges.

What Insurance Typically Covers

Most extended health insurance plans in Ontario include coverage for chiropody and podiatry services. This often applies to:

  • Assessments and follow‑up visits
  • Custom orthotics
  • Orthopedic footwear (when medically necessary)
  • Nail and skin procedures
  • Footcare for chronic conditions such as diabetes

Coverage varies by provider, but many plans reimburse a significant portion of your care. Some plans even cover 100% of certain services.

Do You Need a Doctor’s Referral?

In most cases, no referral is required to see a chiropodist. You can book directly. However, some insurance plans request a referral for orthotics or specific treatments. If needed, we’ll let you know exactly what to ask your doctor for so the process is simple.

How to Check Your Coverage

Patients often find it helpful to contact their insurance provider and ask:

  • “Do I have coverage for chiropody or podiatry services?”

It has been a long winter in southern Ontario. Most people have limited their walking outside due to snow and ice on sidewalks and roads. The good news is most of the snow and ice has melted from the sidewalks making it safer to walk without slipping. The bad news is that first spring walk or run might lead to heel pain. Plantar fasciitis usually comes on gradually, but can occur suddenly and be severe. It can affect both feet, but often occurs in only one foot at a time.  Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain.
